Building Excellence Tennis Project

Wichita State tennis has a storied tradition, which dates back to its founding in 1886.  The men’s tennis program has boasted 22 Missouri Valley Conference titles, the most by any Shocker sport program, including 83 individual singles and 39 doubles championships.  The Shocker women’s program has won 10 conference titles, including regular season and conference tournament crowns leading to a second round appearance in the NCAA tournament this past year.

The Vision

Wichita State tennis continues to strive to be a national power in college tennis with a goal of attaining a top 25 national ranking, winning the Missouri Valley Conference Championship and continuing to be a leading program in the central region.  Wichita State tennis will also continue to serve the community of Wichita by promoting junior tennis development while benefiting local charitable organizations.

WSU Athletics has identified four key areas to achieve this vision: Facilities, Funding, Player Development and Community Support.  Of these priority areas, Facilities is a cornerstone component to future success.

Campaign Project Features

Facilities define success in college athletics as they enhance image, provide the best environment for student-athletes, assist with recruiting and make attending events more enjoyable for the fans.  As the Shocker tennis programs seek excellence in the future, investing in facilities will pay huge dividends. The vision of facility improvements include:

New Scoreboard/Complex Scoring System

A new addition to the facility will be an expansive scoreboard, strategically placed just north of the complex pavilion.  The new scoreboard will display match results for spectators to follow the action on every court at the Coleman Tennis Complex.

The scoring system will make matches run more efficiently and provide added enjoyment for spectators.  Additionally, having an advanced system will better position WSU to host conference, NCAA and professional tennis matches.

Renovation of The Coleman Tennis Pavilion

Improvements will include upgrading the student-athlete team room, renovating recognition areas for team accomplishments, expanding space for team meetings and tournament usage and enhancing team locker room areas.

Complex Improvements

Additional improvements will be made to enhance the overall look of the complex while increasing signage and west side bleacher seating.

The Building Excellence for the Student-Athlete Campaign – Shocker Tennis. As the name implies, this initiative is truly about the student-athlete.  They are the focal point of college athletics.  It is a privilege to assist them in achieving their best athletically and provide for WSU sports programs to reach their utmost potential.

This project has a vision of leading Shocker tennis to the pinnacle of athletic prowess.  The campaign’s objectives are critically necessary to ensure the very best in future excellence.
