Building Excellence Baseball Project

Wichita State University has tremendous pride in its athletic programs.  Shocker Athletics is one of the windows in which the university and community are viewed.

The Building Excellence For The Student-Athlete Campaign is an opportunity to enhance the quality of athletic facilities and further foster institutional distinction.  The project will build practice and team facilities which will impact the student-athlete in baseball and other sports, plus improve competitive success.

Please consider how you might join the Shocker team in making a difference in the lives of our student-athletes and in the positive future of athletic programs

Building Excellence for the Student-Athlete

Quality facilities define future success for athletic programs.  They provide the ability for student-athletes to skillfully practice and compete, and for sports program to operate at their optimal efficiency.  Facilities enhance image and positively affect recruiting.  They impact winning and its corresponding benefits to the university and community.  This dynamic initiative is critically needed and will affect Shocker Athletics for years to come.

The project is divided into two phases, based on priority of need.  However, it is the committed intentions of the campaign to fund and construct both phases together as soon as possible.

Campaign Project Features

Phase I
  • A 170’ x 170’ (22,500 square feet) indoor practice facility with field turf, full infield and retractable batting cages.  This climate-controlled facility will be utilized during inclement weather by Shocker baseball, as well as Shocker softball, track and golf teams.  It will also be used for conditional and training activities by all 15 sport programs.
  • Installation of new artificial turf playing surface for entire baseball field
Phase II
  • New third base side home team locker room (lower level) with dressing area, team room, showers/restrooms, satellite athletic training facility and equipment room.  Players will be able to access indoor practice facility and dugout from locker room.  First base dugout/locker area will be occupied by the visitors.
  • Relocation of baseball offices (ground level) and home team dugouts to third base side for convenient access to the new home team locker room and indoor practice facility.
  • Lower both dugouts for improved sight lines for players and coaches.
  • Additional third baseline seating and concourse area.

Why is it Needed?

  • First-class facilities provide student-athletes with the best possible athletic experience and create and environment for them to achieve the finest overall performance for their teams.  Top facilities also enhance student-athlete recruiting, which plays a key role in the program success.
  • Project will benefit all 260 student-athletes on each of the 15 varsity men’s and women’s sports programs through team usage and training/conditioning.
  • The indoor practice facility is essential for training during inclement weather conditions.  For example, Shocker baseball is at a disadvantage since it does not have an indoor facility in which to train.  This is critical for preseason preparation and the ability to stimulate infield practice, throwing, hitting, pitching, etc.
  • The current artificial turf is in significant disrepair, with split seams, etc.  A more contemporary surface will allow the Shockers to be among the best in college baseball.
  • Current baseball locker room facilities are of insufficient size and are showing their age.  Upgraded facilities will provide a better atmosphere for student-athletes and promote recruiting.
  • A series of adjustment are contained in the plan to move all baseball operational facilities (locker room, dugout, offices, and practice facility) together to the third base side for better coordination and functionality.  The ticket office is moved to the first base side to accommodate this change.  A third base entrance will remain.
  • The additional seating and concourse is needed to provide proper transition and appearance with a new building being introduced into the interior of the stadium.
