Adney Named MVC Scholar-Athlete of the Week

Wichita State volleyball student-athlete Emily Adney has been named one of the Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athletes of the Week for the period of September 17-23. Brian Dixon of Southern Illinois is the other honoree.

Now in its 14th year of existence, The Valley’s Scholar-Athlete program honors its student-athletes for their athletic performance for a one-week period and academic success in the classroom.

Moore Named Academic All-District

The College Sports Information Directors of America announced Thursday that Wichita State track & field senior Audacia Moore has been named to the 2012 Capital One Academic All-District Women’s Track/Cross Country second team.

Moore received the honor in NCAA Division I District Seven, which includes Colorado, Idaho, Kansas, Montana, Nebraska, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Texas and Wyoming.

The Academic All-District teams recognize the nation’s top student-athletes for their combined performances athletically and in the classroom.

Abrahamian Earns State Farm Good Neighbor Award

Wichita State track & field student-athlete Jaclyn Abrahamian has been named Wichita State’s winter recipient of the State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Good Neighbor Award.

In an effort to honor the achievements of exceptional student-athletes, the MVC, in partnership with State Farm, has created the MVC State Farm Good Neighbor Award. Ten student-athletes have been named by Commissioner Doug Elgin as the honorees for the 2012 winter season.

This year’s winter honorees include Charonn Woods, Bradley, Men’s Basketball, Sr.; Matthew Dorwart, Creighton, Men’s Basketball, Sr.; Sarah Yeager, Drake, Women’s Indoor Track, Jr.; Colt Ryan, Evansville, Men’s Basketball, Jr.; Jeanette Nolte, Illinois State, Swimming & Diving, Jr.; Andrea Rademacher, Indiana State, Women’s Basketball, Jr.; Christiana Shorter, Missouri State, Women’s Basketball, Jr.; Chelsea Hartman, Northern Iowa, Swimming & Diving, Sr.; Harry Whitt, Southern Illinois, Men’s Basketball, Fr.; Jaclyn Abrahamian, Wichita State, Women’s Indoor Track & Field, So.

In order to be eligible for the award, the student-athlete must be in good academic standing, must demonstrate good citizenship through good sportsmanship and significant community service, and must participate in a sport, during the season of recognition. The Valley will recognize 10 student-athletes three times annually (fall, winter, spring), for a total of 30 honorees. Institutions select their Good Neighbor Award honorees.

State Farm Insurance is a long-time sponsor of the Missouri Valley Conference and serves as title sponsor for all 18 MVC championship events. Also, State Farm is a prominent sponsor of the league’s television network and a sponsor of the Missouri Valley Conference’s community outreach program, “Just Read!”

Orukpe Named to MVC Scholar-Athlete Team

Wichita State center Ehimen Orukpe was named Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete honorable mention, the league announced today.

Orukpe, a 7-foot junior from Delta, Nigeria, is a math major who carries a 3.68.

The criteria for the Missouri Valley Conference’s Scholar-Athlete Team voting parallels the CoSIDA (College Sports Information Directors of America) standards for Capital One Academic All-America voting. Nominees must be starters or important reserves with at least a 3.20 cumulative grade-point average (4.0 scale). Student-athletes must have reached sophomore athletic and academic standing at their institution (true freshmen and redshirt freshmen were not eligible) and must have completed at least one full academic year at their institution. He must have played in 75 percent of his team’s games, or played in the State Farm MVC Championship this past week.

Bayliff Named MVC Scholar-Athlete of the Week

ST. LOUIS – Wichita State baseball student-athlete Garrett Bayliff has been named one of the Prairie Farms/Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athletes of the Week. Malaikah Love of Southern Illinois University is the other honoree. Love and Bayliff were honored for their performance during the period of February 20-26.

Now in its 13th year of existence, The Valley’s Scholar-Athlete program is sponsored by Prairie Farms, Roberts and Hiland Dairies. On a weekly basis, the Conference honors its student-athletes for their athletic performance for a one-week period and academic success in the classroom.

An outfielder for the Wichita State baseball team, Bayliff, a sophomore from Tuttle, Oklahoma, batted .692 (9-for-13) with 10 runs scored, four doubles, five runs batted in and a stolen base, as the Shockers went 5-0 on the week, defeating Oral Roberts (10-3 on February 21) and sweeping North Dakota (7-1 on February 24, 26-0 and 13-1 on February 25 and 16-1 on February 26).

Bayliff, who has a 3.30 cumulative grade-point average in exercise science, went 2-for-3 with two runs scored against Oral Roberts. In game three of the North Dakota series, he went 4-for-6 with four runs scored, three RBI and three doubles — the most two-baggers in a game by a Shocker since 2009. In the finale versus the Fighting Sioux, he went 3-for-3 with three runs, two RBI and a double.

To qualify for Prairie Farms/Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Week laurels, student-athletes must carry a cumulative grade-point average of 3.20, completed at least one academic year at a Valley institution and must be at least a sophomore in academic standing. Redshirt freshmen and first-year junior college transfers are not eligible. In addition to the academic qualifications, student-athletes will be evaluated on their athletic performance for a one-week period.
